##### Our curators at Natural Medicine are always busy trying to find support for your work. Sometimes people ask us why they didn't get a vote, as if JUST writing a post warrants a reward, but those that have been here for a while know it's not that simple. Our curators have very diverse 'health' interests, from natural medicines to mindfulness, earth medicine and natural homesteading practices, forest bathing and wildcrafting, cannabis and everything in between. Some of us are OCD & Curangel curators, and all of us are on the lookout for ways we can reward you. In this post three of our curators explain what their interests areas are, what they love, and even what they don't. We hope you enjoy this little insight into each curator's 'natural medicine' focus. ### @Riverflows Whilst I don't do many curation posts (only when I have time and the whim takes me!) I do spend a lot of time looking for OCD candidates, posts to share on Twitter and posts worthy of upvotes and tips. I'm personally interested in herbal medicine and homesteading. I really love it when people take the leap to experiment with herbs and plants for their home medicine cabinet, talk about plants they've found in the wild, concoct recipes out of foraged food, or talk about their personal experiences with plants. My pet hate is any posts titled 'The Health Benefits of....' - I find them a little dull, and they often simply repeat stuff I can easily find on the internet. I also appreciate any posts that are really well formatted and researched - for example, @choogirl wrote a great post about gut microbiome and the COVID vaccine which was really well backed up with evidence. I'm not really looking for people to be experts or authorities, I'm looking for stories, stuff that moves and inspires me. I'm also pretty keen on supporting #mentalhealthawareness, and I like to encourage #yoga posts as well. Oh and #plantbased food. Good evening everyone. This happens to be my first post here on the natural medicine community and I would be sharing about garlic and it's medicinal importance. According to studies, the common name garlic was derived from the Old English word garleac. Literally, interpreted, the latter means “spear leek,” making reference to the lanceolate shape of the plant’s cloves. Currently there are two main recognize types of garlic: *HARDNECK and * SOFTNECK. Hardneck varieties produce a flowering stalk (scape) which is surrounded by underground cloves. Hardneck varieties are considered to be more flavorful and easier to peel than softneck, making them the choice of most chefs. However, it is worth knowing that hardneck garlic does not store well. Softneck (aka silverskin) varieties generally do not flower and form seed, but often produce bulblets on their stem. They are considered to be more productive and easier to grow than hardneck varieties. Under proper conditions softneck varieties can be stored from six to eight months. Most of the garlic found at supermarkets is of the softneck type. It should be noted that elephant garlic is not a true garlic. Rather, it is a type of leek that produces larger leaves and bulbs than true garlic. Garlic (Allium sativum) is a member of the onion (Amaryllidaceae)family, and is classified in the same genus to which onion, leek, chive and shallot belongs. Evidence exists that garlic originated from Allium longiscuspis, since it does not appear in the wild as a species itself. Garlic’s medicinal properties are thought to be due to sulfur-containing compounds called thiosulfinates. One of them, allicin, is produced when a sulfur-containing amino acid called alliin comes in contact with the enzyme alliinase when raw garlic is minced, crushed, or chewed. Since the enzyme alliinase is broken down by heat, cooked garlic is less effective medicinally than is fresh garlic. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MEDICAL BENEFITS OF Garlic THAT WE NEED TO KNOW? 1. Hello, friends! Today i would like to share one of my horrible experience in facing one disease, i have never experienced this bad thing before. Well actually i felt the symptoms of these red puffy itchy and hurt on my left foot first few days ago, at first i thought it was insects' bites. Recently in our office we tidied up the hardcopy documents so i thought it happened in my office. But, after few days it even getting worst, it hurt, itchy, puffy and bad thing was it also appeared on my hands too. what a mess! The condition of my skin It started from my feet then legs, thighs and also my arms :' So this morning, i decided to call the dermatologist, a nurse answered the phone that my doctor, like usually, will open at 8-11 am and 5-8.30pm. My sickness made me uncomfortable and made me as soon as possible has to meet the doctor. So after mom and i took a bath then we went to the house of the dermatologist. When we came, oh la la many patients were there. OMG, i know that it should wait for a long time until my number was called. I got the 43, while the patients that inside only around 10 something. It was quite through cause i actually met the doctor at 11.30 something. What a time to wait! We should come earlier... :' When the nurse called my number, we still had to wait inside with some other patients. Then after waiting again, time to go to the examination room. The doctor like usually greets me nicely and he asked who was sick today. Mom answered it was me, he examined my skin and he said it was because of the cat's fleas. My skin was sensitive and soft. The fleas irritated it. He shot me with the allergic medicine. I also got two kind of medicines which i should take twice a day, in the morning and also evening. I must finish all of this medicine. He also gave me a kind of ointment, that would help with the itchy and hurt of my skin, it will also help me with the marks. It should be put on my reddish skin 3 times a day, after i took a shower in the morning, afternoon and also before i go to sleep. He asked me not to scratch it so it wouldn't left any dark marks on my skin. He also asked us to clean my bedroom especially the ceiling cause usually the cat's fleas like to live there, where the place had high humidity, during the rainy season. He also said that usually it cause of the cat's which just gave birth to the kitten, the cat and also kitten should kept far away from our place. He also asked about my psoriasis skin which already has been better and better so he only asked me to maintain it healthy with the baby lotion and 5,000 IU of D3 vitamin every morning. The medicines i got from the doctor. My dermatologist said to me, get well soon before we said good bye. If i still have any symptoms next saturday i need to meet him again. Hopefully i would get a speedy recovery. I share about this issue about skin health in order to warn you to ne careful with animals' fleas and i hope you would be all healthy. Dear friends, family, and HIVE community, My name is Remenzer. I come from Sabah, a Dusun people. In this post, I want to share the story about my eldest child, my son, Ray Einstein. He is diagnosed having aplastic anemia since November 2020, where his bone marrow fails to produce blood cells in sufficient numbers. Ray Einstein 5 years old with his Dusun's Traditional Sigar (hat) Ray is born on January 26th, in year 2012. He is 9 years old now. I can tell he is a smart kid. He likes to do a lot of readings and he knows a lot of things better than I am at his current age. I still remember he begged me to buy him the Minecraft Bedrock from google playstore, which I already granted 3 years ago. He is the one who make me fall in love with the game. We have so much fun together playing on the same world in minecraft. He make me happy in a lot of things, when he diagnosed having aplastic anemia, it hit me really hard. I am in a lot of depression but I always fight it for him and stay strong. There are a lot of time where I blame myself for what happen. To be honest, I am afraid that I will lost him because of this decease, and I am emotionally unstable almost everyday. The battle within me is real. I struggles to stay positive and stay strong. There were several tests that had been done prior to transplant to ensure he can tolerate the procedure which were includes test on his heart, lung, kidneys, eyes, abdomen, hearing, and a dental exam. I feel so grateful because all of this tests should only be finish on middle of May 2021, but, by the time I write this post, all of the tests already had been carried out in February. Ray admitted on February 1st to do all the exams and tests, and discharged on February 19th. 2021. We have one week to rest at home before we go back again to the be hospitalize for the BMT procedure that start on March 1st. Before we go back to the capital hospital wad, both of us need to be tested for covid-19 twice. February 24th and 26th. This is where we take our first covid-19 test. February 24th. After the test done, we both walk on foot to the local town. 15 minutes walk. Exercise is good for both of us right? That's not the main reason tho. Hard to explain. In this picture, Ray is tested for covid-19, and me next. Second test on February 26th. On the same day, Ray also tested for full blood count (FBC). The result is not good. His haemoglobin count is 6.6 and his platelet is 2.0, which is critically low. Because of that, Ray hospitalized for blood transfusion. Ray receives 1 pint irradiated red blood and 4 packets of irradiated platelets transfusion in the local hospital.He will be admitted here for 3 days. We will be send by ambulance on March 1st to the capital hospital. At the beginning of the BMT procedure, he will receive central venous line (CVL), which will be inserted into the large vein leading to his heart. His younger brother, Rez's cell stem will be transfuse via this line. We are so grateful because Ray's younger brother, Rez has good result on HLA typing tests. My biggest pray and hope is that Rez's cell stem will be enough in numbers and will have no issue when entering Ray's bone marrow and eventually produce healthy and sufficient numbers of blood. Optimal food can help us have optimal health. Fortunately, we can find what’s optimal food with a simple test: - Would we eat this food in nature? So, # How about fruits? Are they optimal or are they suboptimal? Can fruits be our main food or is other food better as main food? Let's suppose the fear for fruits is legit, just to see where this claim leads us. So let's suppose fruits can't be our main food. In this case we shouldn't eat too many fruits, despite the fact that we can eat them in their natural form. What should be our main food, foods that need cooking? We have to cook foods to eat them, when we can't eat them in their natural form. Why can’t we eat some foods in their natural form? Because we're not naturally adapted to eat those foods. - We're naturally adapted for food that's edible in its natural form. - We're not adapted for food that have to be cooked to be edible. Not to mention that cooked food have negative compounds such as mutagens, carcinogens, teratogens. Also, cooking food destroys some of the nutrients. How many nutrients are there in cooked food? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. So, How many reasons to eat large quantities of cooked food are there? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. Now we have access to: - food for which we're naturally adapted – fruits and - food for which we're not naturally adapted Between the two, Which one is a better option? Many people fear eating too much fruit despite the fact it's food for which we're naturally adapted. So Where did all the fear of fruits come from? Somebody told me: >At a TV show a doctor said eating too many fruits can cause high blood sugar, that in turn overworks the pancreas. So the recommendation is to take it easy with fruits, to avoid diabetes an and enlarged pancreas. Here’s another recommendation. This time from The American Diabetes Association: They recommend >a diet that allows up to 30% (of total calories), to be derived from fat. What's your opinion about these recommendations? Is the fear for fruits based on facts or is it just an opinion? What are the facts that support this fear? How about we explore some facts about our reality, which is where we live? # The cause of high blood sugar When there is too much fat in the blood, the sugar can no longer exit the blood. What’s excess fat? When you eat more than 10% (of total calories), you're consuming too much fat. So, i let you decide how reliable is the medical community as a source of information. The more excess fat you eat the more risks you have for diabetes. The excess fat build up in arteries as plaque, which causes multiple health problems, as multiple organs need arteries. No wonder why the number 1 killer worldwide is heart disease, caused by clogged arteries. Some people are concerned about carbs. Fat can also be on our checklist. You're free to eat as much fat as you want, as long as you like the effects of excess fat. How many people who know the negative health effects of excess fat are there? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. No wonder so many people live a low-carb lifestyle. Also, a high-fat lifestyle causes kidneys problems. And more than half of the kidney function is irreversible damaged before the damage is visible on blood tests. It's true that some people lose weight with a high-fat lifestyle. However the eventual short-term benefits are not worth the health problems. Let's suppose you live a high-fat lifestyle for a short period of time, so you damage your health only for a short period of time. Then what? What are you gonna do afterwards? What lifestyle are you gonna live afterwards? Many people live a high-fat lifestyle because they don't know they can lose weight on a high-carb fruit-based lifestyle without the negative effects of excess fat. In spite of the evidence that a low-fat lifestyle can reverse diabetes, few medical doctors recommend this approach, instead they only recommend a medical treatment, in this case insulin. The medical treatment and the cause of disease are different matters. The disease wasn't caused by lack of medication. While insulin works on the effects (i.e. it lowers the blood sugar), it does not address the cause. When we work only at the effects, the cause (e.g. excess fat) continues to get compounded. Many people allow the cause of their health problem to get compound, because they have no information about how they can work on the cause. How much information about health is there in the public? I don't know and i don't think there is enough. So many people have unnecessary health problems because they don't have enough information despite the fact that now we have more access to information than ever before. How do you explain that? Isn't the role of the health system to help people be healthy? How can we be sure we have an optimal fat intake? Don't worry. There's no excess fat in a fruit based lifestyle in which we eat optional small amounts of overt fats: seeds, avocado, coconut, etc. You already know what this means from a previous article. # Other causes It’s true that you'll have a spike in the blood sugar, when you eat processed foods, as they’re concentrated in sugar. Fruits have a different effect as they have a different composition: in addition to sugar, they also have water and fiber. On a fruit based lifestyle, the quantity of fruit we eat at a meal have a low impact on our blood sugar, as most of that quantity is water. Also, the fiber slows the absorption of sugar. On the other hand, on the common lifestyle, a meal can have a high impact, as it has less water and fiber, as processing removes water and fiber. Not to mention the other health effects of processed food such as excess fat. - Raw-vegan desserts, dehydrated raw-vegan foods, dry fruits (dates, raisins) have a higher impact on our blood sugar, as they're more concentrated in sugar, as they have less water. - Juices have a higher impact on our blood sugar, as they're more concentrated in sugar, as they have less fiber. You can eat: - food that's more concentrated in sugar such as processed food, or - food that’s less concentrated in sugar such as whole fruits. The choice is yours. - The higher the sugar concentration, the higher the impact on our blood sugar, - The higher the impact, the harder the pancreas works. When you eat foods that are concentrated in sugar, you might be able to maintain an optimal blood sugar level. However the pancreas overworks to do so. Foods that are processed (with/without heating) are not optimal, as they overwork the pancreas; this causes irritation, inflammation, enlargement, degeneration. How many reasons to overwork the pancreas are there? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. How can we be sure fruits are safe? Don't worry. There's no overwork for the pancreas when we eat fruits in their natural form, which is also the simplest way to eat them. When you educate yourself about the digestive system of our closest relatives, you find some differences. How many differences are there? I don't know and i don't think there are enough to suggest different diets. How many reasons are there to move away from a fruit-based lifestyle on which primates have flourished for many tens of millions of years? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. How many facts to support the fear for fruits are there? How many smoothies are there in nature? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. So Why would we consider them? People believe smoothies are healthy food because the advertising says a blender breaks the food to get the nutrients out. What happens when you cut an apple in 2 pieces? You lose some nutrients, as they get oxidized. What happens when you cut an apple in 1000 pieces? You lose even more nutrients. How many nutrients are there in those smoothies? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. What the advertising doesn't say is that a blender also breaks the nutrients. While a smoothie might be a fancier way to eat, it's not a more natural way to eat. Also, it’s not optimal. # How about juices? How many juices are there in nature? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. So Why would we consider them? People believe juices are healthy food because the advertising says a juicer removes the insoluble fiber that we don't absorb anyway. The insoluble fiber in fruits slows down the absorption of sugar. So, What happens when we remove it? We end up with food that's more concentrated in sugar, as it has less fiber. The more concentrated a food is, the higher the impact on the blood sugar, the harder the pancreas has to work to keep the blood sugar level in optimal parameters. How many reasons to overwork the pancreas are there? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. What the advertising doesn't say is that we’re not designed for such concentrated foods. When we chew fruits, we mix our saliva with fruits and we let the stomach know how much fruit we eat. When we drink juice, we won't start the digestion with chewing so we won't have the best start for digestion. The natural way of eating fruits is to take the fruits and eat them. Nature is perfect and simple. We can't beat perfection. When we complicate the natural process of nutrition, we make it worse, not better. A fruit is perfect in the form it exists in nature. When we juice fruits, we create a food in which the proportions are different than in a whole fruit. You can take some leaves and some roots and turn them into a juice, which might be a more convenient way of eating. While juices might be a convenient way to eat, it's not as healthy as just eating the whole fruit. The abundant content on juice recipes also comes from the medical approach. You already know what this means from a previous article. E.g. some people might want beetroot juice for its medical properties. Every species can ensure its optimal health with its specific food, the food it eats in nature, without tools. How many overweight animals are there in nature? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. Considerind more than half of all people are overweight, animals seem to be healthier than us, even though they don't follow a medical approach: they don't drink beetroot juice for the medical properties of beetroot. They just eat what's optimal for them. How about us? Why do we search for medical properties? # The medical approach People are drawn to herbs and foods that have medical properties to improve their health. The medical approach is an effect of eating sub-optimal food. It’s a reaction to unhealthy action (unhealthy lifestyle). We don't worry about health when we live an optimal lifestyle, as optimal foods are the best for optimal health. In an optimal lifestyle, we're free of the search for medical properties, as in this case, we just enjoy the food for which we're adapted. However, this worry-free lifestyle is possible only for healthy people. How about people who take medical treatment? Only medical personnel is qualified to offer medical education to people who are under medical treatments. How about people who can't eat whole fruits, because of dental problems? In this case a soft live food (e.g. a juice) might be healthier than a soft cooked food (e.g. mashed potatoes). Dehydrators, food processors, blenders and juicers are useful for making raw-vegan foods: dehydrated raw-foods, raw-vegan desserts, juices, smoothies. Even though these foods are raw-vegan, they don't exist in nature. Not all raw-vegan foods are the same. A raw-vegan lifestyle is healthier than the common lifestyle, as live food is healthier than cooked food. However, complete information is that whole fruits are healthier than processed fruits: juices, smoothies, etc. Nature is perfect. Food is perfect in the form it exist in nature. We can't improve perfection. Using tools to process our food won't make it healthier. When we move away from natural food, we also move away from optimal food. What's my opinion about health? Do you remember the compound effect? The further we move from optimal food, the further we move from optimal health. This is exactly what we see in health oriented communities: a tendency to move away from what's optimal. Considering we have access to optimal food, it's not necessary to move away from optimal food. It's true that some people eat sub-optimal foods in the transition to an optimal lifestyle. Still, this doesn't mean we should focus on sub-optimal food, does it? When we share recipes, we can inspire people to make those recipes, especially when it comes to delicious foods: juices, smoothies, raw-vegan desserts, etc. Without complete information, people can get inspired to invest their money in tools that are not even necessary for optimal health. When in fact a more useful usage of their money might be quality food. The suffix -cide means " to kill". When optimal health is our goal we can also limit the negative health effects of pesticides by investing in organic foods, especially for the dirty dozen (the most contaminated foods). Pesticides are also useful for killing insects. No wonder the pollinators are in decline. So eating organic food is also beneficial for pollinators, i mean pollination. It’s true that some people make juices in spite of knowing what's optimal. How about people who complicate their life because of incomplete information? Wouldn't it be healthier to offer complete information and let them choose between an optimal lifestyle and a sub-optimal lifestyle? I share what's optimal and what’s not, as complete information can enhance someone's health. You’re still totally free to eat whatever you want. Roots juice is food that doesn't exist in nature. # How about roots? Even though we can enjoy enough carrots to feel satiated, they're not useful for optimal digestion. To be digested roots need valuable energy that can be used for much easier to digest veggies such as lettuce. # How about other leafy greens? How many spinach leaves that you can eat in their natural form are there in nature? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. Why can't we eat spinach, cabbage and other leaves in their natural form? Because it's not optimal for us. Leafy greens (except lettuce) are hard to digest. That's why we have to add accompaniments to make them edible. Also, leafy greens contain oxalic acid (a negative compound) that blocks our ability to absorb minerals such as calcium and iron. How many reasons to block our ability to absorb nutrients are there? I don't know and i don't think there are enough. Of all leafy greens, lettuce is lower in oxalic acid. Personally i don't see education as a hassle that bothers me. On the contrary, so far (more than 30 years) i went through a lot of hassle because i didn't have complete education about health. This hassle included: - Investing money in food that only recently i found that we can't even digest well. - Investing time in preparing plant-based recipes, that are not even necessary. I wish i'd had complete education earlier as it could have saved me all the hassle i went through. In this scenario i would have invested my resources in optimal health. There is a saying: society is so fake that reality bothers people. When we're bothered by reality (which is where we live), Where are we living, in an illusion?
