GERD stands for Gastro-esophageal reflux disease. When the acid content of the stomach goes up back to the oesophagus (gullet) and creates symptoms, it is called GERD. Today one patient came to me who had the features of GERD. The most troubling symptoms he was suffering from were a burning sensation of the chest aka heartburn, and a feeling of tightness in his throat, after something coming back from his stomach into the throat. He also had frequent belching. He tried different kinds of anti-acid drugs with mixed results; sometimes feeling better and another time worse, despite taking medicines. I took the proper medication history. I found out that he wasn’t taking the medicines regularly. Moreover, he had some other contributing factors, notably smoking and eating spicy/junk foods. I prescribed a proton-pump inhibitor along with the antacid syrup. I asked him to quit smoking and avoid junk/spicy foods. --- # Take home message: * **GERD affects approximately 30% of the general population.** * **Occasional GERD is commonly seen in healthy people as well. But following reflux, certain in-built mechanisms come into action and neutralize the acid.** * **Long-standing GERD may present with some complications. ![]() I made friday into a family day after getting some work done early on. Since there are many postponed matches that will be played around 17:00 next week which I don't want to miss, I won't be going home as usual on tuesday. My nieces also are having their exams soon so they have less time for fun. I also watched another episode of Doctor Who with them and they absolutely love it just like I do. I plan to have season 1 done by the end of the year. I ate healthy all day but just a bit too much especially on the nuts. I also continue to drink a lot more water than usual and taking my daily supplements.
